Something called a "vaginal pessary" is a circular device, usually made of soft plastic or rubber, that is inserted into your vagina. The pessary will hold your vaginal structures in place, thus preventing symptoms of prolapse and/or worsening of your prolapse. If it is moderate to severe, however, surgery will most likely be required; the good news is that surgery is usually very successful at treating and resolving vaginal prolapse. Surgical replacement of the prolapse may be done while your dog is under anesthesia. Often, the veterinarian will apply medications to the prolapse to help reduce the swelling before gently pushing it back into its proper position.

True vaginal prolapse is a rare condition in dogs and it is occasionally observed in animals with constipation, dystocia, or forced separation during breeding. You can treat causes for straining such as diarrhea, infections, etc., with proper medication, diet, and supplements. However, it is better to get rid of this problem sooner, as it only worsens the situation for your dog. If you are overweight or obese, this puts additional stress on the muscles and ligaments within your pelvis and vagina. Being overweight can significantly increase your risk of recurrence of the condition following surgery, due to the continual extra pressure in the area. There are a few things you can do to help a dog prolapse heal at home. Wash the area with warm water and a mild soap, then pat it dry.
As unsightly as it may be, the condition of vaginal prolapse commonly occurs in female dogs that have not been spayed. Due to the action of the female hormone estrogen, the tissue of the internal vaginal walls swells and protrudes through the vulva; the external female genital organ. If you have only mild vaginal prolapse, your doctor will likely recommend modifying your activities to avoid heavy lifting and/or straining. Unless the vaginal prolapse is blocking the urethra completely so that your pet cannot urinate, the condition is not a medical emergency. In some cases, it’s possible to ease symptoms or reverse a mild uterine prolapse by doing pelvic muscle exercises, along with other self-care measures.
A veterinary consultation will be required for diagnosis of vaginal prolapse. The timing of the problem (during pre-estrus or estrus), and the typical appearance of the mass upon physical examination, will usually be sufficient for diagnosis. In an older female dog, a tissue sample is often taken to differentiate the condition from a cancerous growth.
These two conditions do share some symptoms, but the approach to treating them is different. The most efficient way to prevent your dog from having prolapse is to prevent it from straining to defecate. You can give them stool-softening foods to help them defecate easily. The sooner to address the straining, the less likely it is to occur.
In the first week or so, you may get tired quickly and need pain medication for a week or two. Full recovery will take anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks if an open surgery procedure is utilized and 1-2 weeks if a laparoscopic or vaginal procedure occurs. After the prolapse has been treated, it’s important to take measures to prevent it from happening again.

Skip the dog park for a while, as other dogs will be curious about what is happening to your dog. Give your dog supplements
To reduce your risk, be diligent about doing Kegels, limiting lifting, and any other preventative measure that your doctor suggests after surgery. Your doctor will be able to go over the risks and benefits of estrogen replacement therapy in your specific case, to help you decide whether this treatment is right for you. Note that there are some cases in which estrogen replacement therapy is not safe. When lying down or sitting comfortably, contract your pelvic muscles and hold the contraction for 5 seconds. Ultimately, you will want to aim to hold the contraction for 10 seconds, to release for 10 seconds, and to repeat this 10 times. The hyperplasia regresses as soon as the follicular phase of the estrous cycle has passed.
